We have played for Chicago's Summerdance, Navy Pier's Beer Garden, Old Town School of Folk Music and various festivals throughout the city. Our ensembles play traditional Cuban from the golden ages of the 40's 50's and 60's still keeping the "Charanga" format.
Charanga is a classical chamber ensemble that came out of Haiti, featuring the unique sound of the french flute and violins. During the Haitian revolution of 1804, this sound migrated to eastern Cuba where it reached Santiago. In the space of 120 years, the modern Charanga was born by adding elements of Africa, Spain, Haiti and Cuba transforming it into an electric mix of cultures and one of the worlds most exciting dance genres. s the only band in the Midwest that plays this traditional music from the 40's, and 50's which came from Cuba and 60's and 70's that is considered "The New York" style which was developed in the states. - Party Noire
- PARTY NOIRE Presents A L C H E MY: 10 Year Anniversary
PARTY NOIRE Presents A L C H E M Y: 10 Year Anniversary
10 Years of Creative Alchemy. Shapeshifting joy. Regenerating space.
A decade of building worlds...sound that moves through the body like memory. It’s a living archive. A gathering spell. A collective breath.
What started as a monthly day party became a pulse — a portal — a collective practice.
Party Noire has always been more than a party. It's been movement as alchemy. Joy as ceremony. A space for Black queer freedom to sweat, shapeshift, and shine.
This season, we’re honoring that legacy — ten years of dreaming, dancing, and daring to gather differently. And we’re also thinking, dreaming, beaming beyond…to 11, to 111, to the star that’s still being born.
We’re calling in a decade of dance floor devotion — and stepping into a new era grounded in regeneration. Not just looking back — but composting what we’ve learned so we can keep creating the spaces we need. Together.
Monday, September 1st, 3–10PM, The Promontory, Chicago.
Expect: A lineup of DJs who’ve shaped our sound. Come for the joy. Stay for the care. Sensory invitations into our past, present + next. Bring your full self — or whoever you’re becoming.
This is A L C H E M Y.

- Barrington Levy
DOORS 8 PM
In 1976, BARRINGTON LEVY formed a band with his cousin, Everton Dacres, called the Mighty Multitude; the pair released “My Black Girl” in 1977. Levy established his solo career the next year with “A Long Time Since We Don’t Have No Love”; though the single was a failure, the 14-year-old was a popular performer at Jamaican dancehalls. Soon, Levy met Junjo Lawes and Hyman Wright, both record producers, and recorded several singles with the Roots Radics, including “Al Yah We Deh,” “Looking My Love,” “Englishman,” “Wedding Ring Aside,” and “Collie Weed,” all of which became hits and established Levy’s career.
Levy’s next few singles were similarly successful, including “Shine Eye Girl,” “Wicked Intention,” “Jumpy Girl,” “Skylarking” (by Horace Andy), “Disco Music,” “Reggae Music,” “Never Tear My Love Apart,” “Jah,” “You Made Me So Happy,” and “When You’re Young and in Love.” Levy then recorded several duets with Toyan, Jah Thomas, and Trinity, and memorably appeared at Reggae Sunsplash in 1980 and 1981. Though LPs were not terribly important in Jamaica at the time, Levy released three albums before 1980: Bounty Hunter, Shine Eye Gal (United Kingdom), and Englishman, a critically acclaimed record.
By 1980’s Robin Hood, Levy was one of the biggest Jamaican stars, and saw his international fame growing as well, especially in England. Taking a break from albums, Levy then released a series of hit singles, including “Mary Long Tongue,” “In the Dark,” “Too Poor,” “I Have a Problem,” “Even Tide Fire a Disaster,” “I’m Not in Love,” “You Have It,” “Love of Jah,” “Under Mi Sensi,” “Tomorrow Is Another Day,” “Robberman,” “Black Roses,” “My Woman,” and “Money Move.”
Levy returned to LPs with Lifestyle and Money Move, followed by a British hit album called Here I Come; Levy received the Best Vocalist prize at the British Reggae Awards.
The late 1980s saw Levy, now in his 20s, slow down his output, though he continued to perform and record until 1988. In 1993, Levy tried to break in the United States with Barrington, but Levy and his label, MCA Records, did not have a good relationship and he soon left. In the 1990s, Levy continued to release periodic hits in Jamaica, and more rarely in the UK. In 1998, he released Living Dangerously, which included a dynamic collaboration with one of Jamaica's most prolific deejays, Bounty Killer. The release was one of Levy’s most successful singles since the start of the ’90s, and allowed him the opportunity to be identified by members of the younger generation of dancehall patrons.
After the death of Sublime’s Bradley Nowell in 1996, Barrington and the remaining members got together to record several songs and toured. Levy was only involved in a handful of shows, but his contribution to their 1999 release “Right Back,” under the new moniker Long Beach Dub All Stars, was considered the best of the album.
Levy was featured on a 1999 track by the Rascalz titled “Top Of The World,” also featuring K-os. Levy also appeared on two singles by rapper Shyne (notably Shyne’s 2000 debut single, “Bad Boyz”), and on a track for drum ’n’ bass artist Aphrodite’s 2000 album Aftershock. In 2004, he contributed to a track on the album White People by Handsome Boy Modeling School, a project by Prince Paul and Dan the Automator.

The Apogee Music Series is a month-long celebration at The Promontory in Hyde Park, uniting emerging talent and legendary artists in a boundary-pushing blend of sound, style, and innovation.
Dawn Richard
As a founding member of Danity Kane, Dawn Richard has explored the ins and outs of commercial pop music. As a solo artist, over the span of six critically acclaimed Dawn Richard full-length albums, she treats Louisiana Creole culture, New Orleans bounce, and Southern Swag as elemental, allowing her to weave in and out of house, footwork, R&B, and more.
As she proudly proclaimed on her 2021 album Second Line: “I am the genre.” On her most recent albums, Quiet in a World Full of Noise and Pigments, collaborations with multi-instrumentalist and producer Spencer Zahn, she and Zahn meld an orchestral fusion of neoclassical, ambient, and jazz, both albums receiving a multitude of critical accolades which brought them to perform at the London Jazz Festival in two successive years.
Dawn is currently working on her next full length album, scheduled to be released in 2026.

- Nate Smith
DOORS 7 PM
NATE SMITH
For nearly two decades, Nate Smith has been a key piece in reinvigorating the international music scene with his visceral, instinctive, and deep-rooted style of drumming. He holds a diverse and ample résumé — which includes work with esteemed jazz leading lights such as Pat Metheny, Dave Holland, Chris Potter, José James, John Patitucci, Ravi Coltrane, and Somi among many others. His 2x GRAMMY-nominated debut album, KINFOLK: Postcards from Everywhere, sees Smith fusing his original modern jazz compositions with R&B, pop, and hip-hop. He’s also ventured into the pop/rock world with recent collaborations with Vulfpeck spinoff band The Fearless Flyers, Brittany Howard (of Alabama Shakes) and performances with songwriters Emily King and Van Hunt. In recent years, through a series of viral videos, he has emerged as one of the most influential and popular drummers of his generation. His videos have been viewed millions of times and have inspired countless musicians and fans. In September of 2018, he released his first ever solo drumset album Pocket Change.
As a composer and arranger, Mr. Smith received two (2) GRAMMY nominations for his composition “Home Free (for Peter Joe)” for best instrumental composition and best arrangement (instrumental or a cappella). Of the KINFOLK: Postcards From Everywhere project, Mr. Smith says: “It was my goal to start with the simplest of elements, singable melodies with familiar harmonies, and use them to weave stories that felt nostalgic without being overly sentimental. Pieces like ‘Retold’ and ‘Pages’ use familiar, consonant harmonies as a means of evoking the listener to “reach back” for a memory, while ‘Skip Step’ and Spinning Down’ use layers of rhythm to express a feeling of unsettled tension. ‘Disenchantment: The Weight’ uses an ascending/descending chord progression to simulate a deep sigh of resignation, while ‘Home Free (for Peter Joe)’ uses a hymn like melody as a means of evoking feelings of both solemnity and ceremony.
- Kaash Paige Better Than Revenge Tour + Nobu Woods
DOORS 6PM
KAASH PAIGE
Flaunting delicate vocal delivery and sincere lyrics, Kaash Paige consistently asserts herself as an uncompromising, unfiltered, and undeniable voice for 21st century R&B. Holding nothing back, the platinum-certified Dallas-born singer and songwriter confidently examines the complexities of life and love with a fine artist’s attention-to-detail. After tallying streams in the billions and earning acclaim from The FADER, Pitchfork, Refinery29, NPR, Vogue, Lyrical Lemonade, and more, she goes even deeper on a series of 2022 singles and her second full length offering for Se Lavi Productions and Def Jam Recordings.
As a kid in Dallas, she initially split her time between music and softball, basketball, and track. With dad a sound engineer, she recorded on his equipment and embraced music wholeheartedly in high school. She picked up steam on Soundcloud in sophomore year.
By the time senior year rolled around, she made her international breakthrough with “Love Songs” in 2018. Following its runaway success on TikTok, the track eventually eclipsed 1.5 billion total streams and counting and picked up a platinum certification from the RIAA. It set the stage for her 2019 debut EP, Parked Car Convos, which bowed in the Top 15 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers Albums Chart and spawned “Heartbreaker” (30 million streams) and “64’” (22 million streams). She maintained this momentum on her 2020 full-length debut, Teenage Fever. Powered by “London” (19 million streams) and “Jaded” (14 million streams), it boasted guest appearances from the likes of K CAMP, 42 Dugg, Isaiah Rashad, SSGKobe, and more. At the same time, she shined on tracks with everyone from Alicia Keys to Moneybagg Yo in addition to featuring on Don Toliver’s “Euphoria” alongside Travis Scott. Along the way, she posted up nearly 100 million YouTube views and attracted an audience of 1.4 million across social media.
She turned the first page on her next chapter with “Girlfriend” in 2022. Her gleefully stoned intonation instantly intoxicated over airy production as she warned, “Don’t fall in love with a bitch like me.” Right out of the gate, it incited widespread tastemaker applause. The FADER attested, “Kaash Paige’s songs feel like late-night text convos brought to life,” and Brooklyn Vegan hailed it as “woozy, atmospheric.”

- Apogee Concert Series ft. Emma Nissen
The Apogee Music Series is a month-long celebration at The Promontory in Hyde Park, uniting emerging talent and legendary artists in a boundary-pushing blend of sound, style, and innovation.
Emma Nissen is a 23-year-old jazz-pop phenom who became known for her “Jesus and Jazz” style after a reel of her scatting on her Christian song “Breathe” went viral in late 2023. Since then, thanks to her timeless voice and lovable personality, her videos have amassed over 100 million views, taking her Instagram following from under 10k to over 400k in under six months.
This surge in attention led to Emma being recognized by the likes of Lauren Daigle, SZA, Meghan Trainor, Queen Latifah, and long-time Rihanna, Maroon 5, and Justin Timberlake collaborator, Emmy and Grammy winner Adam Blackstone—who invited Emma to perform with his world-class band at the famed NYC jazz club, The Blue Note. This led to Blackstone producing her most recent single and album title track, "Love Like You."
Additionally produced by Grammy, Dove, and Billboard award winner Seth Mosley, Grammy award nominee Nate Pyfer, and acclaimed producer Stephen Nelson, her debut album showcases Emma's extraordinary talent and is set to be one of the standout releases of the year. Love Like You will be released on August 28, 2024.

- Apogee Concert Series ft. Sy Smith
The Apogee Music Series is a month-long celebration at The Promontory in Hyde Park, uniting emerging talent and legendary artists in a boundary-pushing blend of sound, style, and innovation.
Sy Smith has long since solidified her place in the world of underground soul music (she’s often called “the hardest working woman in underground soul”). This Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter and producer helped cultivate the nu-soul scene in that city more than 10 years ago, a scene which now easily boasts some of the most progressive artists of that genre to date, some of whom came directly from Smith’s own band line-ups (including Thundercat and Kamasi Washington).
Her catalog includes 5 studio albums, with contributions from a who’s who of producers (James Poyser of The Roots, Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest and Nicolay of The Foreign Exchange). All 5 of her albums, including her brand new project “Sometimes A Rose Will Grow In Concrete” have been heralded by critics around the world for Smith’s lyrical dexterity, her vocal whimsy (often colored with a very distinctive rhythmic swing that’s all her own) and her ability to spin a story like few others in soul music. Listeners often remark on Smith’s vocal range, which moves effortlessly from a speakeasy, gritty alto all the way to a stratospheric soprano whistle register reminiscent of the late Minnie Riperton.
Smith’s career began as a backing vocalist on some of the music industry’s most coveted gigs. She has provided supporting vocals for Whitney Houston, Sheila E., Meshell Ndegeocello, Chaka Khan, Usher, Macy Gray and The Rickey Minor Band (as seen on American Idol for six seasons and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno). Most recently though, she’s caught the ear of jazz aficionados as a featured guest with Grammy-winning trumpeter Chris Botti
